You should not think of Trump as a speaker. It does not matter to him whether a statement is true or false. It does not matter if one statement contradicts another, in the same speech or in the same paragraph or in the same sentence. What matters to Trump is whether the words serve the purpose at hand. He will say anything if he believes it will get an audience to listen to him or if he thinks it will move him closer to a political goal.
He was also asked about the decision in Florida to allow a 6 week ban to take effect. In response, Trump implied that he wants Arizona and Florida to loosen their abortion restrictions. He supports states’ rights to decide their own abortion policies, even though he criticizes the states’ bans.
The position is a departure from mainstream thinking. The majority of Americans think the legal right to abortion should be upheld in the case of abortion in the constitution, even though there are other ways to do it. The Supreme Court has left abortion rights up to the states since the year 2007, giving state legislature the flexibility to restrict and limit bodily autonomy of anyone within their borders.
Do We Need It? Donald Trump and the Arizonans Are All You Need: The Biden Campaign Can Address Trump’s Critique of Roe Violating
The presumptive Republican candidate shook his head and repeated “no” twice after being asked whether he’d sign a ban if Congress passed one.
“Now the states have it and the states are putting out what they want. It’s the will of the people,” he said. Everybody wants that to happen, because Florida and Arizona are probably going to change.
Since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, abortion rights have repeatedly won in statewide ballot measures. Abortion has proven to be a factor in state legislature elections. Both Florida and Arizona will likely see a question on abortion access on their ballots this fall.
With that in mind, the Biden campaign has been attacking Trump on abortion rights throughout this campaign. The Biden campaign released a statement in response to Trump’s Wednesday remarks.
“Donald Trump owns the suffering and chaos happening right now, including in Arizona, because he proudly overturned Roe – something he called ‘an incredible thing’ and ‘pretty amazing’ just today,” said communications director Michael Tyler.
