Texas braced for a possible hit from the storm that churned in the Gulf of Mexico

The Yucatan Valley Tropical Tropical Storm Seen by Beryl and the City of Tulum, Mexico, on July 4, 2015. A U.S. Coast Guard Warning

TULUM, Mexico — After battering Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Beryl moved back into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico where it was expected to regain hurricane strength Saturday before taking aim at the Texas coast, where officials urged residents to brace for a potential hit.

“There is an increasing risk of damaging hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge in portions of northeastern Mexico and the lower and middle Texas coast late Sunday and Monday,” the center warned.

40 counties have been pre-emptively declared a disaster by Dan Patrick, the acting governor.

Some Texas coastal cities called for voluntary Evacuations, banned beach camping and urged tourists to move their recreational vehicles away from the coast during the July 4 holiday weekend. In Corpus Christi, city officials announced it had distributed 10,000 sandbags in less than two hours Friday, exhausting its supply.

Jamaica, St.Vincent and Grenadines, and the Grenadines are currently being ravaged by a tropical storm. According to officials, there have been seven deaths in the country of Grenada, 3 in St.Vincent and the Grenadines, 3 in Venezuela and 2 in Jamaica.

Before the storm hit Mexico, the officials had set up shelters. When the wind started picking up on Thursday, officials on four-wheelers with megaphones ordered the people to leave the beaches. Eggs were moved off the beaches that were threatened by the storm surge.

The city was without electricity when the storm hit. There were car alarms set off by the winds. Wind and rain continued to whip the seaside city and surrounding areas Friday morning. The army brigades cleared fallen trees and power lines in the city.

Laura Velzquez, national head of Mexican Civil Protection, said that no dead or wounded were reported and that half of the town was without electricity.

Jamaica and the other islands ravaged by the Hurricane were still reeling, as many people in the Peninsula took a deep breath. The southern parish of St Elizabeth, one of the worst-affected areas on the island, was visited by Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Thursday.

Tourists also took precautions. A therapist from Idaho said she filled up empty water bottles from the tap at her hotel.

Emergency Services and City Facilities in Galveston for the Beryl Storm, a Hurricane that Will Become a Fateful Outburst

“It will be a deadly storm for people who are directly in that path,” Patrick said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. “Property can be rebuilt, but lives cannot be.”

The lieutenant governor also shared his worries about tourists visiting for the July Fourth holiday not being aware of how dangerous Beryl will be. The maps are green and the roads leaving the coast are not. So we don’t see many people leaving. If you’re moving, today is the day,” he said.

“There will be inland flooding, and what we find is this freshwater inland flooding tends to be more of a killer of our citizens than the actual storm surge,” Kidd said. Please don’t drive through water. Turn around. Don’t plunge into the water.

All city facilities in Galveston were closed on Monday in anticipation of the storm. And the White House said Sunday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency sent emergency responders and resources to communities along the coast.

“It’s unfortunately right in line with what we would expect when we’re changing the planet and changing our oceans,” Andra said. Warming the planet due to the fossil-fuel emissions can allow the ocean to warm, allowing a storm like Beryl to develop and intensify quickly.

Residents along Texas’ Gulf Coast remember Hurricane Harvey, which hit the area hard in 2017 as a Category 4 hurricane. At least 68 people were killed in Texas by the storm.
