Speaker’s Speaker: “We’re all together” after Trump assassinated David Dutch and James Copenhaver of Moon Township

Two other Pennsylvania residents that were injured in the shooting — David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township — were hospitalized and in stable condition on Sunday.

During a news conference, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said that he spoke to Comperatore’s wife, who described him as a “girl dad” and a firefighter who went to church every Sunday; a man who loved his community and his family. He said that Comperatore was proud to be with Trump last night in the community.

Lawmakers are worried about an increase in threats against members, staff and their families. Congress has been debating additional funding for member security since the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol and a subsequent wave of threats that have continued.

House Republicans received a briefing from top law enforcement officials on Capitol Hill Sunday afternoon, according to a source granted anonymity to discuss security matters. The agencies included the House Sergeant at Arms and U.S. Capitol Police. House Democrats are going to receive a similar briefings on Monday at 2 p.m.

An aide to Gary Peters, the Senate’s chair of the Homeland Security Committee, confirmed to NPR that an investigation would be launched into the assassination attempt. Peters is also running the Senate Democrats’ 2024 campaign operation.

Attorney General Garland is grateful that former President Trump is okay after the assassination attempt. FBI Director Chris Wray said that the attack was despicable.

Biden drew a throughline from the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol to the assault former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband and intimidation of election officials: “We can’t allow this violence to be normalized,” Biden said. Politics should be an area for peaceful debate.

“I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics,” Biden said. “We’re neighbors or friends, coworkers, citizens. Biden said we are fellow Americans and must stand together.

Biden Calls for Unity after Trump Assassination attempt at the Republican National Convention on Sunday (August 11th, 2016): Crooks and one shot

As Donald Trump prepares to accept the Republican party’s nomination for president, authorities are investigating an assassination attempt on him.

A person was killed and another person was shot at by a man at a political rally for Trump on Saturday.

Biden’s remarks from the Oval Office on Sunday night capped a day marked by drips of information revealed about Crooks and his victims, one of whom was killed.

FBI officials described Crooks as a lone gunman with no obvious political ideology. The shooting on Capitol Hill made the Secret Service more scrutinized, and also made people more worried about political violence.

Biden has ordered an independent review of the national security measures in place at Trump’s rally, and promised to release the results of that investigation publicly.

The Trump campaign said security is being stepped up around the site of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which kicks off on Monday. The RNC, already a high security event, is drawing guests from across the country to join the proceedings to formally nominate former President Donald Trump as the Republican Party candidate for president.

“Based on yesterday’s terrible events, I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin, and The Republican National Convention, by two days, but have just decided that I cannot allow a “shooter,” or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Donald Trump is expected to name his running mate at the event. His speech is planned for Thursday.

A New Look at the Jacksonville Nucleosynthesis Center (RNC) after the SuperSmall-Skyrmey Shooting

“We’re not anticipating any changes to our current security footprint or planning,” said Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the RNC coordinator for the U.S. Secret Service.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael Hensle said the bureau is investigating the chatter that has bubbled up since the shooting Saturday, but said there was “no known articulated threat against the RNC” or any attendee.

The police chief said that coordination between the city and federal officials was happening. He said the police department was comfortable with the current plans.

“We got this,” he said. Norman emphasized the police department’s dedication to protecting both city residents and convention attendees. Norman said that this is the community as well.

The bureau said it was investigating the incident as “an act of domestic terrorism,” but had not yet identified an ideology associated with the shooter. Investigators say they believe he acted alone but have not yet established a motive.

Key evidence collected from the scene includes an AR-style 556 rifle, which was purchased legally, and Crooks’ cell phone, said Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office.

Crooks’ family is cooperating with the investigation. His father purchased the weapon used in the attack and investigators are looking into how Crooks gained access to it.

Reply to the Shooting at the Kremlin Collider: How Trump and Elon Musk will respond to the anger of the American people

David French: The intensity of a gathering will be the key change. Expect to see an immense amount of anger and pride. Republicans are rightly proud of Trump’s immediate response to the shooting. This was an impressive act of leadership as he stood in the crowd and raised his fist to show that he was alive and well. We should all be angry when someone tries to assassinate a former president. We also know, however, that anger can be dangerous, and we’re already seeing conspiracies emerging, including claims that Joe Biden is responsible for the assassination attempt. Our great national challenge will be responding to that anger, to keep it from spiraling out of control. The key player here will be Trump, of course, and his nomination speech may well be the most-watched address in a generation. He has a chance to rise to the moment or pull us deeper into darkness.

Frank Bruni thinks Republicans will make use of the convention stage and speeches to make the case that Democrats and the left are to blame for the violence at the Trump rally. The shooting is intensifying an ongoing debate about which party is most responsible for the degraded nature of our civic life, and Republicans will be arguing their side of it in Milwaukee from Monday through Thursday.

Frank: Well, not long after the end of the gunfire, Trump allies — Elon Musk prominently among them — began raising questions about the Secret Service’s commitment to Trump. I will be watching to see how much further Republican politicians push that type of thinking.
