Up First: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Keeping Ms. Harris in the Enlightening Regime

Within a few days, Ms. Harris will be seen as the presumptive Democratic nominee. Pollsters will need a few days to return and ask people their views and crunch the numbers.

Voters aren’t looking for instability. The hasty handing of the reins to Ms. Harris will likely have no impact on Democrats who want to focus on defeating Mr. Trump. They have a nominee who will clear the low bar that many voters thought Mr. Biden couldn’t: Ms. Harris.

Laws in the heyday of the Russian missile attack: Ukraine’s largest bookstores facing potential legal challenges and a new dinosaur discovery

The White House stated yesterday that the Secret Service director had resigned. She was confronted with bipartisan criticism for not answering some questions about the attempt on Trump’s life while testifying before the House Oversight Committee.

One of Ukraine’s largest book-printing plants, Factor Druk, looked like a massacre after a Russian missile strike in May. Seven employees were killed and 20 others were wounded. Tens of thousands of charred books and printing machinery lay in smoldering ruins under the caved-in roof. The attack even destroyed copies of Words and Bullets, a collection of interviews with writers on the war’s front line set to be released last month. The owner of the printing plant, Serhii Polituchyi, says he has not been deterred from plans to reopen because the industry is thriving. The Ukrainian Book Institute tells NPR that bookstore chains have opened dozens of new stores in the past year alone.

What Have You Learned About Me? A Conversation with a Democrat Pollster on a New Parent’s Sex Life After a Baby

A message to my readers who are new parents: Congrats! How’s your sex life? Chances are, it’s not so great. Between diaper duties, sleep deprivation, hormones and general exhaustion, you don’t have time to be intimate with someone. Maybe you don’t feel good for sex after having a baby. The relationship experts offer some tips to help keep the romance going in the wake of a baby.

There’s rarely a perfect time to be a pollster, but on Sunday afternoon, as my latest national survey of voters was wrapping up, President Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the 2024 race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.

I’m sure I’m not the only pollster who was in the field, trying to measure the impact of the events of just the previous several days: the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, the selection of JD Vance as Mr. Trump’s running mate, the president coming down with Covid, the entire Republican National Convention.

The 2024 race has been turned on its head. We need two things to read about the effect of the change at the top of the Democratic ticket.

Clarity on the “who”: Democratic leaders seem to be coalescing quickly around Ms. Harris, and Democratic voters, so far, seem to be largely OK with this, though some may still pine for an alternative or a more deliberative process.

Ms. Harris will drive abortion messaging. During the June debate, when asked about the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Mr. Biden’s answer was meandering. One of the few issues where voters consistently say they trust Democrats more than Republicans is abortion, and Ms. Harris indicated that she would make this issue a centerpiece of her message.

Republicans could fall into a trap if they lose against Ms. Harris. It’s hard to overstate the extent to which Republicans view Ms. Harris as unappealing. If you only learn about her from conservative media, you’re most likely steeped in “unburdened by what has been” video montages and criticism of her laugh. Assume this is how most voters think of her — or that they will care about this slight awkwardness — at your own risk.

Newly undecided voters could crucially defeat Vice President Benjamin Netanyahu in a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress and Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu can expect a mixed reception today when he’s scheduled to speak at a joint meeting of U.S. Congress. The Republicans are in agreement with Netanyahu and Israel’s actions in Gaza. But Democrats are increasingly critical, with President Biden calling for a cease-fire. About 200 protestors were arrested yesterday after staging a sit-in against the war in Gaza on Capitol Hill. Netanyahu believes that Hamas needs to be destroyed in Gaza, which will probably be the central theme of his speech.

According to a new NPR poll, Vice President Harris has the chance to win over voters who say they are undecided. The poll finds Harris and Trump are statistically tied, but 1 in 5 independents now say they are undecided — up from 4% a week ago This makes the next few weeks vital for Harris as she reintroduces herself.

The Impact of a “Tough” Justice Act on Social Justice: The Contributions of J. Clement to Climate Change in Alaska during and after Barack Obama’s First Term

The Interior Department’sJoel Clement worked on policies meant to help the people of Alaskan communities that are threatened by rising sea levels. His work moved forward during former President Barack Obama’s administration. When Trump took over, Clement was reassigned as part of a government-wide effort to stop working on climate change. Clement became a whistle blower after quitting because of the Trump administration’s political interference with science. Many scientists are concerned that such interference would be even more severe in a second Trump term. Here’s why.

A PhD student made a different discovery when she explained our emotional connection to popular music. Her find: Today’s most popular tunes are much simpler than hits from decades ago. Hamilton analyzed pop songs and found that the vocals have gotten less sophisticated over time. That doesn’t mean that today’s hits lack complexity.

She was criticized for how she championed tough truancy policies when she was the attorney general for California, which some said perpetuated inequities in the criminal justice system and disproportionately affected families of color. Harris later said she regretted the “unintended consequences” that law had on families.

Harris was not able to differentiate her position on key issues as her competitors were able to do. Harris didn’t gain steam with limited funds and little excitement behind the campaign, and she dropped out by the end of December.

During her 2020 presidential bid, Harris ran to the left of Biden on several criminal justice issues, like ending solitary confinement and implementing a national standard on the use of deadly force.

But her “tough on crime” track record as a prosecutor, district attorney, and attorney general in California during the 1990s and 2000s is a clear reminder of her complicated and sometimes contradictory legacy on the criminal justice system.

It was last year. Harris was still a relative newcomer in the Senate. She made a big deal of her grilling of the Supreme Court nominee.

I want to know if any laws give the government power to decide about the male body. she asked Kavanaugh in a question pointedly about reproductive rights.

When Biden was nominated to be Trump’s running mate in 2020, she showed him that she was capable of going after Republicans and she was even labeled “nasty” by Trump.

Things started to go wrong when she entered the White House. She misstepped in an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt when answering why she had not yet visited the border at the time, had turnover in her staff, and had consistently low approval ratings early into her tenure as vice president.

The Rise and Fall of the Online Troll against Sarah Harris: The Failure to Stand Up for Women’s Rights and Freedoms in Politics

According to a 2020 study, Harris has been the target of nearly 80% of the times when she has been the subject of sexist and verbal abuse in politics.

Jankowicz believes that harmful narratives are part of the criticism and abuse women in public life receive.

Jankowicz said that calling out the sexist and racist online troll against Harris is important because it only grew after Biden announced his candidacy.

She believes that it’s important that the narratives and lies that are being said are labeled as such because they are an attempt to undermine the public service of Harris because of her gender, race and background.

Harris, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, has had a career with many firsts: She was the country’s first Indian American senator. She is California’s first female attorney general. She became the first black or asian American to be vice president in 2021, and also the first woman in the position.
