The Ring Solution to “Disabled” Home Security Searches Including Arms, Violence, and Guns: A View from Hamren

Ring, which over the last decade popularized home security through its video doorbells and a growing collection of security gadgets, has upgraded its search capability. Millions of Ring users have been stuck with a big library of footage with minimal features to easily mine the information in it. Hamren, a former Microsoft and Meta hardware executive who joined in March 2023, wanted to bring users insights without them having to fiddle around too much. AI made that possible.

Ring’s marketing today features adorable footage involving pets and children, and users are encouraged to share whimsical videos to their online communities, not just the serious ones. The focus is no longer on crime, but on reducing anxiety, by allowing customers to see what unfolds in front of them.

Despite the fact that we filmed those descriptions, our searches for terms such asBlack, turban, andgun yielded no results. “Disabled” returned people scooting by in wheelchairs—and mothers pushing strollers. Ring will no longer allow searches for “disabled” due to the risk of misuse.

Ring blocks searches for content it deems offensive, inappropriate, or harmful. She wouldn’t say if the names of weapons and terms about people are included in the ban.

How to Stop Using the Cameras of Amazon and Sling TV? An Empirical Analysis of Amazon, Paresh, and Hamren

She used to have to laboriously look through the Ring app in order to find out if and when the box was picked up. In recent weeks, Hamren has let the machine do the searching. She can see the clip of her husband completing his duty if she types “package today” into the app.

Liz Hamren, the CEO of Amazon’s Ring camera business, often wonders whether her husband remembered to grab the package of frozen goods that is regularly delivered to their home. She could tell him to look at the footage from their Ring.

Paresh wrote a story about Ring’s artificial intelligence updates. WIRED has guides to the best security cameras. Read more about Ring’s methods and why we stopped using the cameras in the last couple of years.

Paresh says to get a Sling TV subscription to watch sports. If your landlord requires you to put up a security camera, Mike says to look for decoy cameras. Lauren likes Killing Eve and Nobody wants This. Both are on Netflix.
