Israel and Iran carry out strikes in the third day of the conflict

“Now they have a second chance to make a deal on their nuclear program,” Israel warned after a U.S. attack on Israel

Donald Trump said he was giving the US a chance to make a deal on its nuclear program and it would be worse than they were told.

“Two months ago I gave Iran a 60 day ultimatum to ‘make a deal.’ They should have done it. he wrote on Truth Social. “Now they have, perhaps, a second chance!”

On Saturday, the foreign minister ofoman said a meeting was canceled. “Diplomacy and dialogue are the only means of lasting peace”, he said.

The U.S. and Iran were planning to begin the sixth round of talks about Iran’s nuclear program on Sunday in Oman. Iran has been crippled by sanctions and the U.S. was trying to negotiate a deal to limit its enrichment.

Israel’s initial attack late Thursday followed intelligence from its Mossad spy agency, which Israel says suggested Iran was close to developing a nuclear weapon. Iran’s nuclear program is considered to be a direct threat to Israel’s national security.

The military of Israel called their deaths a blow to Iran’s ability to explore weapons of mass destruction, because the scientists played key roles in advancement of Iran’s nuclear program.

The strikes came a day after the U.N. nuclear watchdog declared that Iran wasn’t complying with nuclear nonproliferation agreements aimed at halting the spread of nuclear weapons. Iran reacted saying it would create a new uranium enrichment facility. Iran says its uranium enrichment program is for peaceful purposes.

The Iranian state media said that Israeli missiles hit two energy facilities. In response, Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones into Israel, causing multiple casualties and causing significant damage to an oil refinery and prominent science institute.

An Iranian missile strike in occupied West Bank, Israel, claimed by the U.N. ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani

The escalation has raised fears of a wider regional conflict, one that could rope in neighboring countries and threaten to destabilize global energy markets.

A US official told NPR that U.S. ground-based air defense systems helped shoot down the Iranian missiles. The official was speaking on the condition that they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Speaking to the U.N. Security Council on Friday, Iran’s U.N. ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani accused Israel of trying to “kill diplomacy” and called the country “the most dangerous and terrorist regime in the world.” He asked the Security Council to hold Israel accountable.

The number of people killed and injured was over three hundred. The death toll was expected to rise as Iran’s state television reported on a residential building hitting in Tehran.

Israeli emergency services organization Magen David Adom said three people were killed and dozens more injured. The Red Crescent says that children were among the people injured by a bomb in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Iran “crossed red lines” by firing missiles at “civilian population concentrations,” and warned it would would pay a “very heavy price,” the Times of Israel reported.

Mr. Malachi said that he was at home with his wife, sons, and two small grandsons when the missile hit. The impact shook the house and opened the door of his fortified room. After a few minutes, he emerged onto the street to see ambulances and bloodied people rushing for help.

It was not immediately clear whether the damage and deaths had been caused by the missiles themselves or interceptors sent to shoot them down, or falling fragments of both. The Israeli military said both missiles and interceptors had hit areas in Israel but declined to give details.

There was a damaged high-rise near the government quarter and the military headquarters. Some people who were forced to leave their building because of the strike lined up to speak with a municipal official near the impact site. Many appeared upset.

A loud blast and smoke came out of the fortified room when the air-raid alarms went off on Friday, causing a shelter to be created in their apartment.

Struggling to see in the dark, they ran through a hallway and found their entire floor was wrecked. “You couldn’t recognize anything,” she said. “There’s no more house.”

Like dozens of residents in the area, she will be housed in a hotel until the building can be made habitable again. Because her building was directly hit, Ms. Tzur-Amrani will not be allowed to enter it to retrieve belongings for at least a week, the municipal office said.

People from the suburb came out to check out the damage of a strike that killed two people in a two-story home, one of hundreds of houses in the dense neighborhood.

Residents were familiar with the sight. Rishon LeZion, like other cities in central and southern Israel, has previously been hit by some of the thousands of rockets launched from Gaza since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that ignited the war there.

“We are already practiced,” said Tzabari Malachi, 65, who lives near the destroyed home. On Saturday, he watched the tumult on the street from his balcony.

Six miles south, residents of the quiet suburb of Rishon LeZion were piling up shattered roof tiles and glass along the sidewalks after a projectile killed two of their neighbors in a two-story home on Saturday morning. Those who lived close to the impact site were busy gathering belongings to leave for temporary housing.

Israel Trades More Killing Violations in Third Day of Escalating Conflict: Israel’s Defense Forces and the Rehovot Center

On social media, President Trump said the U.S. had “nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight,” but warned that if the U.S. was attacked by Iran in any way, that “the full strength of U.S. Armed forces will come down on [Iran] at levels never seen before.”

It was the most difficult night for Israelis since the start of the fighting, with at least ten casualties and hundreds injured according to the Israeli emergency services organization.

In the north, sirens blared and people ran for shelter as missiles struck the country’s largest oil refinery, located near the port city of Haifa. Four women were killed in Tamra, an Arab town of around 35,000 people, according to the Associated Press. Israel’s fuel structure has been targeted by the Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran in response to its strikes on oil facilities in the south.

In the central city of Rehovot, at least 42 people were injured and several campus buildings at The Weizmann Institute of Science, a prominent research center, were also struck. There was no one injured in the extensive damage to the center.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels said Sunday that they had assisted Iran by launching more ballistic missiles at Israel. Israel’s military confirmed that the group also launched missiles at Israel on Friday, coinciding with Iran’s direct retaliation for Israeli strikes.

An Israeli military official confirmed that the Israel’s Defense Forces, or IDF, attacked 80 targets overnight, including Iran’s nuclear headquarters and two fuel sites.
