Yahoo wants to buy a browser

Are Google and OpenAI OpenAI interested in Buying Chrome? The Perplexity CEO of OpenAI and Google is interested in buying Chrome

Chrome could eventually be up for sale, if the US Department of Justice gets its way in the remedies trial for US v. Google. There are buyers at the door.

Let’s start with the why: a browser is a great way to promote your own search engine. That browser is just as widely used as Chrome. Google makes Chrome, so it obviously makes sense that Google also provides Google Search as its default way to search the web. Chrome is also the most widely used browser by a wide margin — it has an estimated two-thirds of browser market share — so that means that many, many, many more people are using Google Search instead of other search engines just because it’s the default there.

Nick Turley said Openai would be interested in buying the browser. It makes sense for the company to own a popular browser so they can potentially bring more users to the platform. OpenAI, one of the biggest rivals to the giant, would likely be happy to own one of the prized assets.

Perplexity also has a powered search. Perplexity is interested in buying Chrome, testified the company’s chief business officer. Chrome is likely what it wants because it’s a platform that gets more people to use its services. The Perplexity CEO says the company is making a browser to help it build better agents and to better understand its users, and possibly show them personalized ads.
