It’s on PS 5 for the beta testing today

Discord integration for crossplay and voice commands on the PS5 and implications for video-streaming and games at 4k and higher refresh rates

The Discord integration is sleek, though. After a call is transferred to the PS5 you can see your friends across Xbox, PC, and elsewhere in a call and in a separate app until you end the call. Only voice calls are supported, so you won’t be able to view other Discord user’s streams, or see any of their chat messages.

Discord integration is a great addition for crossplay, allowing PS5 players to chat to Xbox and PC gamers without having to rely on in-game chat features. Microsoft improved its own Discord integration for Xbox last year, allowing Xbox owners to join voice channels straight from a console without having to use a phone or PC. Hopefully, we’ll see Sony follow suit in the coming months.

The PS5 will also have variable refresh rate support. This means compatible HDMI 2.1 displays can enable VRR at 1440p to benefit from smoother visual performance in games.

Sony is making changes to the social aspects of the Share screen feature and PS5 dashboard, including a new friends who play tile, which will show which friends are currently playing a game.

While the PS app currently supports auto-upload for screenshots or game clips, you’ll soon be able to upload game captures manually. New games will now be able to load PS4 saved data on the PS5, which is a big deal because there were previously no options to do that. PS5 data and games can be moved from one console to another using a local internet connection, as well as using a new option to move game data from one console to another.

Sony is improving its voice command support with this new update. PS5 owners in the US and UK can now say “Hey PlayStation, capture that!” to save a video clip of their gameplay. You can even ask for custom-timed clips with a command like “capture the last 5 minutes.”
