The first Republican presidential primary debate will take place on August 23, from 9 to 11pm Eastern. The debate, taking place in Milwaukee, is sanctioned by the Republican National Committee and hosted by Fox News. Here are some ways you can watch it.
The location of Wisconsin, one of the most competitive states in the country, will be at the center of the contest. The closely split state is expected to continue to be a focus for both parties.
Baier and MacCallum will moderate the debate. Mr. Baier has previously moderated Republican debates in 2015 and 2016, and he and Ms. MacCallum led a town-hall event with Mr. Trump in 2020.
Eight of the 14 candidates for the GOP nomination for president will take the stage. The criteria set by the RNC made it necessary for these candidates to meet them. They had to fulfill deadlines for the Federal Election Committee while they were at it. The pledge to support the eventual party nominee was also signed by them.
The former New Jersey governor is going for the Republican nomination again. Christie broke relations with the former president after the January attack on the Capitol and was expected to be a replacement for Trump.
Gov. Ron DeSantis — The Florida governor has been at the center of Trump attack ads and also faced Republican criticism over laws signed in the state to limit abortion access and his response to immigration.
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley — Haley was the ambassador to the United Nations under Trump and was the first to challenge the former president.
Asa Hutchinson is looking to appeal to Republican-leaning independents as he stands against Trump and has criticized the former president because of his role in the insurrection.
A large part of the Republican base is made up of white Christian evangelicals. The former president was involved in attempts to change the result of the 2020 election. Pence specifically criticized Trump’s pressure for him to refuse to count certain Electoral College votes, a theory that Pence rejected as unconstitutional.
He is one of the younger GOP candidates. The former tech and finance executive has been a prominent voice in conservative circles, arguing against the environmental, social and governance (ESG) movement and against “woke”-ism.
Trump Will Not Attend The 2020 Presidential Debate: A Counterexample to the Trump-Carlton-Nc Scenarios?
Trump is eligible but choosing not to attend, despite being the current front runner for the nomination. He announced on Sunday via his social media platform Truth Social that he would not be participating.
Not eligible for the debate are: Michigan businessman and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, former Texas Congressman Will Wilde, conservative talk show host Larry Elder and Texas pastor Ryan Binkley.
Donald J. Trump, the clear front-runner for the nomination, plans to skip the debate. He has, instead, recorded an interview with the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. They plan to post the interview on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to run concurrently with the debate, according to a person with knowledge of the planning.
He said in his post that the public knows who he is and what a succesful Presidency he had. “I will not be doing the weights!”
Mr. Trump’s decision to record an interview with Mr. Carlson to be released while his rivals share a stage was a slap in the face to both the R.N.C., whose leadership tried hard to persuade him to participate in the debate, and to Fox News, which is hosting the debate, and fired Mr. Carlson earlier this year.
Trump’s counterprogramming also comes on the week he is expected to voluntarily surrender at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, where he faces 13 felony counts related to efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 presidential election results.
According to the latest polling, a majority of Republican voters still prefer Trump to be the nominee. Most Americans, as well as independents, still don’t like Trump.
The First State Specific ad in Wisconsin and the Role of Hispanics and African Americans in the GOP Debate: FOX Business and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library
The first state specific ad in Wisconsin was announced on Tuesday by the Biden-Harris campaign. The reelection campaign is making their first investment in Hispanic and African American media, and this is the biggest and earliest media purchase they’ve ever made.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library will be the site of the second GOP debate. FOX Business, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, Univision and Rumble are partners with the RNC for the event.
The qualifications to participate in this second event will be higher than in the first, with higher polling numbers and more unique donors, according to the Associated Press.
