During Mr. Biden and Mr. Albanese’s time together, which includes a news conference scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, they are expected to emphasize their shared interests. The most crucial areas of cooperation are a joint contract with Britain to develop and deploy nuclear-powered attack submarines — which gives the United States a crucial technological edge against China — and expansion of a joint military presence in the Pacific islands, including Papua New Guinea.

In the evening, the leaders and their guests will dine in a pavilion on the South Lawn draped in a cascade of colorful cloth inspired by the colors of the sunset, the White House told reporters. Pink roses, Australian eucalyptus, and delphiniums will be on the tables.

“Nurturing our relationships with our allies is critical, especially in these tumultuous times,” said Biden, previewing the state dinner.

President Biden had planned to visit Australia in May, but had to cancel his trip due to the debt ceiling negotiations. There is a crisis overshadowing the visit to honor Albanese.
