The RNC is over and you need to know 5 things

The Last Day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee: A Time for Unity (not Just a Laughlin’ Around Joe Biden)

It is the last day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. In the week since you last heard from me, the circumstances of this election have changed dramatically. Before Saturday, we were waiting for a possible announcement from President Joe Biden over whether he’d remain on the Democratic ticket.

The attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump had an entire conspiracy-ridden news cycle surrounding it. Yes, J.D. The GOP named Vance as their vice presidential pick.

Outside the Fiserv Forum in downtown Milwaukee where the Republican Party has officially selected former president Donald Trump as its nominee, it feels like Disney World for voters who prefer to wear novelty cowboy hats rather than Mickey Mouse ears. Although, I wouldn’t be surprised if I spotted a delegate donning both before I hop on my flight home tonight.

Since the failed assassination attempt on Trump, the Republican party’s election message has coalesced into one word: unity. Some of Trump’s most fervent opponents, like former primary contender and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, gave speeches calling on Republicans to leave interparty conflicts in the past and rally behind their newly chosen presidential nominee, and win back the White House in November.

The message has fostered a celebratory mood where convention-goers can belt out the national anthem in front of strangers. I sat next to a pair of people who cheered when they came back to the convention floor. Shirts, buttons, and stickers emblazoned with the image of Trump after the shooting lined the streets and river walks.

The excitement reverberated onto the internet, where Silicon Valley leaders (and chronic posters) like Elon Musk and David Sacks announced their support for Trump and Vance.

A Brief Press Conference on Project 2025, a Project of the Biden-Harris Campaign, and the First in-person Republican Convention

TheDemocrats are in town speaking with reporters and the mood is not as positive as for the Republicans.

On Wednesday in Milwaukee, in a small room lit blue like a teenaged gamer’s bedroom, the Democratic National Committee and the Biden-Harris campaign held a press conference focused on Project 2025, a Heritage Foundation plan to overhaul the federal government in the GOP’s image. (You can watch me explain Project 2025 on TikTok here.) The last thing reporters wanted to discuss was the project, as the presser opened. Joe Biden is expected to lead the presidential ticket once the Democrats have their own convention next month.

It was also the first in-person Republican convention since the COVID pandemic prompted cancellation of most events surrounding the 2020 RNC. It was the last night of a week of speeches and events that supported the idea of the former president’s vision of the country, including a speech by Trump. Here is everything you need to know from the Republican convention.

Trump started by promising to be a president for all of America, before attacking his enemies even as he spoke in a subdued tone of voice.

The calls for unity and appreciation were followed by an attack on the Democrats for spreading the justice system through their multiple criminal indictments of Trump. Without evidence, he accused his political opponents of using the Covid pandemic to “cheat” on the 2020 election – despite the fact that multiple bipartisan reviews have affirmed the legitimacy of the election.

Five Things You Need to Know Before Choosing a White Man: From Eric Trump to the Electoral Candidate Kai Trump at the 2016 Republik Convention

After surviving the assassination attempt over the weekend, Trump has emerged looking stronger than ever in the minds of many of his supporters. Eric Trump claimed his father was the greatest fighter he had ever seen, and attributed his survival to divine intervention.

It had been speculated for many months that Donald Trump might choose a female running mate or a person of color to broaden his appeal. Instead, Trump chose another white man – and one seen as someone who will be an aggressive fighter on Trump’s behalf.

Vance’s evolution from Trump critic to Trump supporter, and his Ohio roots, could help him make a case for Trump to swing voters in key states in the Midwest and Rust Belt.

Kai was the first grandchild of Donald Trump to speak publicly at the convention, and gave her first public speech.

Trump’s daughter-in-law, who is co-chair of the Republican National Committee, delivered Tuesday’s keynote speech, describing him as an “amazing grandfather.” She also said thank you to her father-in-law for never giving up on her.

Huckabee spoke that same night and said the picture she was painting was of a compassionate boss who made women feel good.

The former first lady made her appearance on the floor of the convention on Thursday night. Trump thanked his wife for releasing a letter after the assassination attempt.

What is the best way to save the country? When the frat brothers in Chapel Hill protested the anti-Israel protests, the Republicans lost ground to Gen Z

To Gen Z voters, Ramaswamy said “you’re gonna be the generation that actually saves this country,” telling younger voters that the best way to be a “rebel” is to be a conservative on college campuses.

The frat brothers from Chapel Hill, who held up an American flag to oppose the anti-Israel protesters, were spotlighted at the convention.

Recent polling shows that Biden and his party are losing ground to younger voters, particularly men, as Republicans reach out to young voters.
