Are There Real Rules in the U.S., or Does Elon Musk Really Want to Do Anything Without His Appropriate Apportionment?
Now he’s bringing that sensibility to the federal government. As long as Musk doesn’t have the power to stop payments, he hasn’t completely succeeded. About 90 years after the Business Plot to overthrow the president and install a dictator, Musk appears to be close to finishing the job. So here’s the question: are there any real rules in America, at all?
Donald Trump, Musk’s wholly owned puppet, has said Musk won’t do anything without his approval. Sure. Okay. I don’t see what difference that makes. We all remember “executive time,” don’t we? This man only wants to golf and watch TV.
This is supposed to be done in the name of cost savings and efficiency, and not to be used as a way for Musk to have his own personal feuds. I don’t think anyone can tell me how to posting to X at all hours of the day is efficient, but it’s one of more minor questions in this scenario. And when I say “this scenario,” I mean that Elon Musk is going to do whatever he wants, and post through it, and threaten anyone who tries to stop him with, apparently, a US attorney.
When did Elon Musk and Donald Trump bust into the bureaucracy and take over? A case study of the Delaware Chancery Court
A reporter is focused on technology, money, and human behavior. She joined The Verge in 2014 as science editor. Previously, she was a reporter at Bloomberg.
Elon Musk has an uncanny ability to sort out which of America’s rules are real. The National Labor Relations Board, NASA and FAA have punishments that are not real. The Delaware Chancery Court is extremely real. Based on the past two weeks, the Delaware Chancery Court may be the only real thing in the entire American government.
Did I get everything? Probably not. For instance, Musk has made statements that he “deleted” a department, for instance, but since he’s a known liar, that may not be true. Between the pace at which events are happening and the confusion among government employees, it’s hard to give a full summary of events. Perhaps between the time this is published and you read it, there will be more bullshit.
The current Trump administration did not know or care about checks and balances, and neither did they in civics class. First, it tried to freeze spending with a legal pronouncement. That was quickly halted by several courts. Then Musk decided to bust into the bureaucracy and start ripping out wires — a technical solution to a legal problem.
Does that sound like liberal hysteria? Here is Brian Riedl, an economist who works for the Manhattan Institute, and who used to be a member of the Heritage Foundation and Republican Senator Rob Portman.
The most immediate consequence has to do with George W. Bush’s efforts to care for HIV patients in Africa, which has saved 20 million lives so far. The building housing USAID has been shuttered. An email explaining the move attributed it to “agency leadership,” and replies to the email “should be directed to an email address that appears to be associated with Gavin Kliger, whose LinkedIn profile identifies him as a special adviser to the director of the Office of Personnel Management and who works for DOGE,” according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Taxpayer’s Palomar-Palomar Crisis: Elon Musk bragged about the USA.I.D
Consider this another example of the TWoP’s, because this is just the beginning. It is likely that Musk will get direct access to treasury payments. Will he stop paying bills, like he did with rumors of the death of his wife? Might be fun to discover what the military does when they don’t get their paychecks, or how many grandparents get evicted when the Social Security checks don’t go out. Do you think foreign spies have penetrated Musk’s server? Maybe all of them.
As for the Treasury stuff — well, if I were a government contractor that wasn’t SpaceX, I’d be nervous. I mean, if you upset Musk, do you think he’s going to pay out your contracts on time?
The first casualty that we know of is the United States Agency for International Development, or U.S.A.I.D. Musk seems to hold a vendetta against the agency. He has called it a “radical-left political psy op,” a “criminal organization” and a “a viper’s nest of radical-left Marxists who hate America.” On Monday, just before 2 a.m., he bragged that he had spent the weekend with his allies feeding the USAID into the wood chipper. Musk hates the agency because of some undisclosed reasons and believes that cutting government spending is the only way to reduce inflation.
Musk had seized control of important levers of power within the federal government and allowed him to destroy federal agencies at will.
Even if anyone had elected Elon Musk to anything, the past week would still be one of the most serious examples of executive branch malfeasance in American history.
