The much anticipated commercial-supported plan will be called “Basic with Ads”.

The Disney Plus Basic Plan: What Does It Really Cost to Stream? Another Comment on What Ads Look Like after the Disney+ Basic Plan became Available

This is not what we were told would happen. When players like Netflix came on the scene, their claim to fame was that they were “disruptors,” here to shake up Hollywood by giving people what they wanted when they wanted it. Consumers revolted against cable companies and left them behind to watch prestige TV over the internet. It worked. There was a boomed. When it became evident that internet and streaming subscriptions were more expensive than cable, people began to clamor for new, more affordable options. They had to subsidize their offerings in order to be able to do that.

Most of what is included with the basic plan will be available in the new tier. However, the “Basic with Ads” option will include an average of four to five minutes of commercials per hour. The ads will play for 15 or 30 seconds before and during TV series and movies.

The new tier will cost $6.99 a month in the United States where it is now available. It is being introduced in Canada, Australia,Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom at various price points.

I am back for another column about what ads look like in your streaming services after the Disney Plus Basic tier became available. If you have watched other videos on the internet, it won’t change the way you view Disney Plus’ ads. The ad plan isn’t a good deal because of the new pricing, which includes a price jump.

But the company can no longer stick to that strategy. It has had a bad year. The platform lost subscribers for the first time in more than a decade and had its stock plummet. The company reported last month that it is growing once more, but it needs to demonstrate to investors that it can bring in money even if subscriber growth remains stagnant.

“As we’ve been discussing over the past few quarters, improving our pricing strategy is an important near-term focus,” the company wrote last month, adding that the “reaction from advertisers so far has been extremely positive.”

Sometimes, even though an ad might be in the video, I kept on watching, because I was told there should be one in the video. I didn’t see any ads for content geared toward younger kids or for anything I watched while examining a kid’s profile, though Disney said it would be the case.

In a browser, if something about an ad has really grabbed your attention, you can click a small “Learn More” text box to be directed to a related website. This option wasn’t shown in the ads I watched.

In short, Disney Plus with ads is pretty much what you’d expect from Disney Plus with ads. But the value proposition is a bit different than it is with Netflix. The new tier with ads is cheaper than the basic tier. Disney Plus Basic, on the other hand, costs $7.99 per month and replaces what’s now known as Disney Plus Premium, the ad-free version that just got a big price bump to $10.99 per month.
