The incoming N.Y. Rep.-elect is under investigation for lying about his past.

An Empirical Correspondence to the Times on “Financial Manipulations” by B.J. Santos

Murray didn’t offer any evidence or documents that would undermine the Times article, which found thatSantos appears to have fabricated key details of his business career.

The discrepancies raise ethical and legal questions for Santos as he prepares to officially take on his role as a lawmaker in January as part of the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives.

Assuming there’s nothing weird about Santos being sworn in as a member of congress on Tuesday, McCarthy will probably not criticize him. This is today’s GOP on display. Even if it is gravely bad for our republic, the party stands for nothing other than gaining power at any cost.

Santos admitted Monday he didn’t graduate from any college or university, despite previously claiming he had degrees from Baruch College and New York University.

Adding to the firestorm are recent developments that federal and state authorities have launched criminal investigations into Santos over his finances and fabrications. When he ran for congress in 2020, he said he had no assets, but still he was able to lend his campaign $700,000.

A search for the Devolder Organization found that the business was registered in Florida in 2021 and was most recently temporarily deemed “inactive” by the state after failing to file the required annual reports. There couldn’t be a website or an account onLinkedIn that could be used to report any of the clients he served.

When the New York Times Comes to an End: George Santos Revisited with Anomalous Claims in a Gay Nightclub

Republicans won control of the House of Representatives after they took control of New York’s suburbs, which they had dominated in the past. The GOP mini-wave outside the city set off recriminations among New York Democrats, with calls for the state party chair to step down

Most of the criticism he faced was centered around his attendance of a rally by former President Donald Trump in Washington in January 2021, and a video that he claimed to have written a nice check.

The New York Times article raised a lot of serious issues, but I think it’s time for GeorgeSantos to address the claims he’s made in the article. “Every person deserves an opportunity to ‘clear’ his/her name in the face of accusations. I agree with this principle, and I look forward to the congressman responding to the news reports.

“Every person deserves an opportunity to ‘clear’ his/her name in the face of accusations,” Cairo added, saying he looks forward to hearing Santos’ response.

A congressman-elect has enemies at the New York Times who are trying to taint his good name with lies, stated Joseph Murray.

“Only in this country does somebody who comes from a basement apartment in Jackson Heights, like I did, is able to rise to become a successful businessperson, to then run for United States Congress.”

Santos, who is gay, also claimed in an interview with WNYC public radio last month that his employees died in 2016 when a gunman opened fire at the Pulse, a gay night club in Orlando, Fla.

“I had people in the club who worked for me and I am very happy about that,” he said. “My company at the time, we lost four employees that were at Pulse.”

New York Democrat Rep. Robert Santos, a House Minority Leader, has declared that he’s not fit to serve

In an editorial before the election, the North Shore Leader newspaper endorsed Santos’ Democratic opponent, Robert Zimmerman, and voiced skepticism about Santos’ credibility.

Besides making a referral to the House Ethics Committee, other potential options for dealing with Santos include not giving him any committee assignments, which would be up to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

A top Republican in Nassau County said that the GOP politician deserves a chance to clear his name in the face of accusations, but that there are some problems on his resume.

In a statement to CNN on Tuesday, Hakeem Jeffries, the incoming House Democratic Leader, stated that Santos is a woefully unqualified Extreme Republican who is clearly not fit to serve.

Several Republican members of the House as well as Republicans in his New York district have called on Santos to resign. He repeatedly said he had no intentions of stepping down and did not take questions Tuesday from NPR.

He is going to write letters to the House Ethics Committee requesting an investigation, and he wants the attorney general’s office to look into potential wrongdoing in campaign finance violations.

Castro said that if the New York Republican lied about his credentials in order to get a seat in congress, there will be more people who will believe that they can fabricate credentials, personal features and achievements to win office.

His own charity, called “Friends of Pets United,” was founded by him, he claimed. In New York state and Florida, there was no such organization found in the IRS database.

Santos has admitted to fabricating sections of his resume – including his past work experience and education – and has apologized but says he intends to serve in Congress.

Democrats have cited the mounting false statements and scrutiny facing Santos as an example of hypocrisy for Republicans booting Omar and two other House Democrats – California Reps. Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell – off committee assignments. Republican leaders have not yet given up on forcing a vote on the House floor on the position of O.J. in relation to House Foreign Affairs.

GOP Rep.-elect Nick Lalota said in a statement that a full investigation by the House Ethics Committee was required and lawenforcement was necessary, which was the most rebuke yet from a Republican.

Rep.-elect Anthony D of New York called forSantos to pursue a path of honesty even though he stopped short of calling for an investigation.

It is very unlikely that the House Republican leadership will refuse to seat a person who is about to be sworn in. The House has the power under the Constitution to expel any member with a two-thirds vote, but doing so is extremely rare and only five lawmakers have been expelled in US history.

When it comes to bad behavior from their time in Congress, the California Republican has shown no inclination to punish their own members. McCarthy has also declined to weigh in when members are under investigation, arguing he will let the probes play out before determining how to proceed.

“This will not deter me from being an effective member of the United States Congress in the 118th session,” Santos told City & State in an interview posted Monday night.

The chairman of the Nassau County Republican committee said that Santos had broken the trust of voters and has a lot to do to regain it.

Cairo said he was deeply disappointed in Mr. Santos and expected more than just a blanket apology. “The damage that his lies have caused to many people, especially those who have been impacted by the Holocaust, are profound.”

Santos also claimed that his grandparents fled the horrors of the Holocaust as Ukrainian Jewish refugees from Belgium — only to have this version of his family background contradicted by a review of genealogy records. TheSantos campaign did not respond to CNN requests for comment.

But Santos described himself as a “proud American Jew” in a document shared with Jewish groups during the campaign, which was first reported by the Forward and confirmed by CNN.

“He deceived us and misrepresented his heritage. He previously claimed to be Jewish, and in public comments, the coalition said. He won’t be accepted at any future event.

He admitted to lying about working for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, as well as having earned a degree in finance and economics from Baruch College in New York.

In the New York Post interview earlier this week,Santos apologized for inflating his resume but downplayed them as sins, saying that they do stupid things in life.

When asked about the significance of his deceptions, he downplayed them, and insisted that he’ll take office next month.

He now admits that it’s not true. He also admits his claim that four of his employees died in the 2016 Pulse night club shooting in Orlando, Fla., was false.

Congressman-Elect Dan Santos: Misleading and Inconsistent with the Constitution and the Vacancies of a New Congressman

The scandal is unlikely to prevent the new government from being sworn in, legal experts say, even though Republican leaders stopped short of urging the new government to step aside.

Richard Briffault, an expert on campaign law at Columbia University, said that the Constitution doesn’t disqualify candidates for lying.

The case record from the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice says thatSantos was accused of taking money from customers but was found not guilty. However, court records from 2013 state that the charge was archived after court summons went unanswered and they were unable to locate Santos.

New York Democrat Dan Goldman, who won a House seat last month, called on the Federal Election Commission to thoroughly investigate Mr. Santos’s disclosures.

The New York Times analyzed the storySantos presented to voters in his campaign for Congress, which spanned the north shore suburbs of Long Island and a small part of Queens.

The attorney general of New York said in a statement that it hadn’t started a formal investigation into Santos but was looking into some things that were reported about him.

“The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated with Congressman-Elect Santos are nothing short of stunning,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.

“The residents of Nassau County and other parts of the third district must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress,” she said. “If a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”

The person who will be a freshman member from New York called for his fellow Republican to cooperate with any investigations and also called on him to apologize. Lawler added that by downplaying action’s, Santos is “only making things worse.”

He is scheduled to be sworn in next Tuesday, when the U.S. House reconvenes. The House Committee on Ethics could look into him if he were to become an elected official.

The Republican has admitted to lying about having Jewish ancestry, a Wall Street pedigree and a college degree, but he has yet to address other lingering questions — including the source of what appears to be a quickly amassed fortune despite recent financial problems, including evictions and owing thousands in back rent.

Nassau County DA’s investigation of a 2008 theft case against a 19-year-old Republican: A report by the DCCC and Zimmerman

A spokesperson for the Nassau County DA’s office, Brendan Brosh, said Wednesday: “We are looking into the matter.” The scope of the investigation was not clear.

Records from Brazil show that he was the subject of a criminal investigation in 2008 over allegations that he used stolen checks to purchase items at a clothing shop in the city of Niteroi. At the time, Santos would have been 19. The Times quoted local prosecutors as saying the case was dormant because Santos had never appeared in court.

He backtracked on that claim, saying he never intended to claim Jewish heritage, which would have likely raised his appeal among his district’s significant ranks of Jewish voters.

In its opposition research on Santos, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised several red flags about the Republican’s record — but also accepted some of his assertions, including his educational record, as fact. The 87-page dossier sought to tie him to the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and his support for baseless claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election. The report also sought to depict him as a far-right candidate. But buried within its report, the DCCC had raised issues about his shaky financial standing and multiple evictions that left him thousands of dollars in debt.

His Democratic opponent, Robert Zimmerman, also tried to raise Santos’ misrepresentations during his losing campaign, but it didn’t gain much traction.

An Update on McCarthy’s Time in the News: The Case Against the Bose-Einstein Condicting of Robertson-Santos

McCarthy has shown his willingness to abandon principle in favor of power before. His flip-flop on who was to blame over the Capitol attack was the most glaring example. McCarthy initially took to the House floor proclaiming about Trump: “The President bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters.” McCarthy added, “He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz wrote in an op-ed that Kevin McCarthy does not believe in core values, as he opposed the Republican leader for speaker. He does not have an ideology.

McCarthy has been outspoken on many other political issues since The New York Times article put the spotlight on Santos. For example, on December 21, McCarthy took to Twitter to slam the January 6 committee, writing in part: “Pelosi’s Select Committee has been focused on political theater and posturing.” That same day, McCarthy vowed on Fox News that Republicans “can eliminate waste and wokeism” when they take control of Congress.

McCarthy has also criticized the Biden administration’s border policy and played up accusations on Fox Business that the FBI worked to suppress news stories hurtful to Democrats.

On December 27, a former congressman confrontedSantos with “Do you have no shame?”, causing an uproar on Fox News.

The New York Democrat is expected to be sworn in to Congress on Tuesday but is facing questions about his past and an investigation regarding his finances.

The vote for the speaker of the US House of Representatives is scheduled to begin after noon on Tuesday, so all incoming members of the 116th Congress will have to be sworn in after that.

The investigation of the 2008 checkbook theft case against Santos: Can he get back on committee, or what can he do about it?

Prosecutors said they will seek a “formal response” from Santos related to a stolen checkbook in 2008, after police suspended an investigation into him because they were unable to find him for nearly a decade.

Rep. George Santos told the House GOP conference on Tuesday behind closed doors he wants off of his two committees until his issues are resolved, three members told CNN.

The New York Republican who has faced calls for his resignation for false statements, including his professional experience and education history, is also a member of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Federal prosecutors are also investigating Santos’ finances, and he continues to face a myriad of questions about his personal finances.

“He just felt like there was so much drama really over the situation, and especially what we’re doing to work to remove Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee,” Greene told CNN.

The FEC complaint states that his disbursements are odd and seemingly impossible. It said that one of the $199.99 costs was supposed to be for a hotel stay at the W Hotel South Beach in Florida, where the lowest priced room would have cost more than $700.

Last week, Santos also filed a slew of amended reports with the FEC that only added to the confusion about the source of loans he has said he made to his campaign.

“We just got out of conference, and George stepped down from committees as he goes through this process,” said an official who chairs the GOP conference.

“There’s a threshold that he feels like [where] he’s not the issue anymore and when he hits that, it sounds like he wants to get back on committees and get going,” Williams told reporters.

I was being asked by the press where I would put him. Can he do this?’ – it became about him,” Williams said. “It’s not about him. It’s about our committee and we have so much to do and when he gets ready to get back on and he’s met the thresholds that he’s set or whatever, then let’s go.”

“Half-measures like voluntarily taking himself off his committee assignments are not good enough for the people of New York’s third congressional district, or for the American people,” Torres said in a statement. “He was a disgrace yesterday. He’s a disgrace today. He’ll be a disgrace tomorrow. He should resign from office immediately.”

He does not have a place in the Nassau County Republican Committee or in public service. He’s not allowed at any of the Republican events or meetings.

McCarthy said during the January press conference that voters had elected GeorgeSantos. If there is a concern, he’ll go through ethics. If there is something that is found, he will be dealt with in that manner.”
