Jimmy Carter is going to get home hospice care

A Conversation with Jason Carter and his Family, Joe Biden, on the Legacy of Jimmy Carter, a Past US President and Social Activist

After a series of short hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter decided to spend his final days at home with his family and receive Hospice care. He has the full support of his family and medical team.

Jason Carter, a onetime Democratic state senator in Georgia and the former president’s grandson, said he visited Friday with his grandparents and that “they are at peace and – as always – their home is full of love.”

Jimmy Carter, who turned 98 last year, became the oldest living US president in history after the passing of George H.W. Bush, who died in late 2018 at 94. The 39th president kept a low profile in recent years due to the coronavirus pandemic but he continues to speak out about the risks of democracy around the world.

Carter had brain cancer that was beaten in 2015, but faced a lot of health scares, and had to have surgery to remove pressure on his brain. His health woes forced him to give up his decadeslong tradition of teaching Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

A peanut farmer and US Navy lieutenant before going into politics, Carter, a Democrat, eventually served one term as governor of Georgia and president of the United States from 1977 to 1981.

The former president is revered for his work on human rights. His brokering of the Camp David Accords in 1978 with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin remains central to his legacy.

In 1982, he and his wife founded the Carter Centre, and over time they helped to build many homes for the Habitat for Humanity organization.

President Joe Biden, a fellow Democrat and longtime admirer of Carter, has been advised of the former president’s declining health and his decision to seek hospice care, an official told CNN. Biden is staying in close contact with the Carter family and the former president’s close circle of advisers.

Carter said that he would travel on behalf of the Trump administration if given the go-ahead. He wrote a letter to Trump and talked to him on the phone.

Jimmy Carter: What he learned from his experience in high-energy politics and how he got to the Oval Office with Joe Biden

Politicians, celebrities, organizations and more have heaped praise on the one-term Democrat who continued leading a life of public service long after he left the White House.

“Jimmy Carter is one of the kindest most thoughtful people I’ve ever had the honor of meeting,” comedian and writer Jon Stewart said. He’s the best of us.

Over the weekend, presidential historian Michael Beschloss shared a series of photos of Carter on social media, including one during his presidency of Carter in the Oval Office with Joe Biden.

Harvard University history professor Annette Gordon-Reed, who wrote The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family, said she was too young to vote for Carter but supported his campaign by helping to run the group Youth for Carter.

I went door to door and handed out pamphlets. Thrilled when he won. I have watched all of his press conferences. Gordon-Reed said he was Devastated when he lost.
