Archbishop O’Connell III. Searching for a Savior in the Los Angeles Subdistrict Assisted by Central American Immigration Processes

The sheriff’s dept said that Bishop O’Connell was a guiding light and that his legacy will continue. We are trying to locate those responsible for his death.

He was a peacemaker with a passion for building a community where the dignity and sanctity of every human life was honored and protected, according to the archbishop.

The LA County Sheriff’s Department has previously said that detectives responded to a fatal shooting on Saturday in the LA suburb of Hacienda Heights.

O’Connell was born in County Cork, Ireland and became a priest in the Los Angeles Archdiocese in 1979. Pope Francis named O’Connell an auxiliary bishop in 2015.

The local church helped coordinate their response to the recent influx of migrants from Central America after O’Connell was chairman of the Immigration Task Force, according to Angelus.

“It’s been the great joy of my life to be the pastor of these people, especially the ones who are suffering or in need or facing difficulty,” O’Connell told Angelus News in 2015.

The scene of O’Connell’s death was lit up with candles in his memory on Saturday, as reported by Clara Harter.

Linda told me that O’Connell was “there for every child and family I have represented.” Always. Helping, supporting and generally being the face of Jesus for me and many many others.”

Archbishop Dave O’Connell: A man of prayer and love for the poor, the immigrant, and the migrant youths

A man was taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of a Catholic bishop renowned for his work as a community “peacemaker,” the LA County Sheriff’s Department announced Monday.

TheArchbishop of Los Angeles said in a statement Saturday he had no words to express his sadness at O’Connell’s death.

Bishop Dave was a man of prayer and love for Our Blessed Mother who was a priest and a bishop for forty-five years. “He was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected.

He said the task force is a labor of love because it is about what the schools and parishes are all about. Not just for unaccompanied minors but for all our children. Even the children who have too much are hurting. They think we have abandoned them. And the migrant youths have become a metaphor for our whole society.”

“I’m brokenhearted. I have been crying for the last few days, knowing that he will not be there to share all of his inspiration and prayers with us.
