A fatal shooting in Miami Beach, FL During the St. Patrick’s Day and Spring Break celebrations prompted by the two fatal shootings

“In response to the two shootings and the excessively large and unruly crowds, and to mitigate dangerous and illegal conduct, the City of Miami Beach has ordered a state of emergency and a 11:59 p.m. curfew to take effect on Sunday, March 19, 2023 through 6 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2023,” the release said. A special commission meeting will be held on Monday to discuss possible restrictions beyond Monday.

On Friday, violence broke out in the popular South Beach area amid both St. Patrick’s Day festivities and Spring Break celebrations, leaving one person dead and another injured, according to authorities. Four firearms were recovered from the scene, police said.

“On Sunday, March 19 at 3:29 a.m. Miami Beach Police officers heard gunshots near 11 Street and Ocean Drive and found one male with gunshot wounds along the 1000 block of Ocean Drive,” the tweet read. The person died at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Unit. A second victim was injured but treated and released on-site.”

“I’m at my wit’s end trying to figure out how to be able to deal with this crowd with the numbers that are here and with what we are encountering during the policing of this particular event,” Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Clements said at the time.

The third weekend of spring break usually sees violence, which is why some Commissioners argued during a special meeting in wake of the fatal shootings. Two commissioners argued it would be unfair to punish future crowds for what happened last weekend.

ABJM Commissioners voted against a TSA-style Pat down Search for a Bayfront Park event at the Future Ultra Music Festival

The move comes as the area is set to host the popular Ultra Music Festival, which is set to bring tens of thousands of electronic music fans to Bayfront Park, according to the Greater Miami convention bureau.

Four of the seven Commissioners voted against the proposal. Six of the panel’s seven members voted in favor of forcing liquor stores to close at 6 p.m. ET.

“By requesting entry into the event, all festivalgoers and attendees shall be subject to a thorough TSA-style pat down search, including emptying pockets and bags, and having your items examined,” the event website says.
