A Senate Indictment Charged George Santos with Charged Unlawful Activity During his 2022 Campaign for the Reionization of the First African American Senator
“Taken together, the allegations in the indictment charge Santos with relying on repeated dishonesty and deception to ascend to the halls of Congress and enrich himself.”
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., declined to say whether he would move to push Santos from office.
A statement released by the House panel in April stated an investigative subcommittee will examine whether Santos “engaged in unlawful activity” during his 2022 campaign.
The Nassau County Republican Committee, which helped elect Santos, has since called on him to resign, as have some prominent GOP lawmakers from New York.
A majority of people think he should not be in office, according to a congressman.
The controversy has created political headaches for the GOP, particularly in New York where there are tough reelection fights next year.
He had to deal with several investigations into how he raised and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign cash, and also made a $700,000 gift to his own election effort.
His education, professional accomplishments, champion volleyball player and family experiences in the Holocaust were all lied about in his interviews and campaign documents.
The freshman lawmaker pushed the boundaries of conventional political scandal after his victory in last November’s midterms. It was revealed that he fabricated most of the persona presented to voters.
George was employed and running for congress when he applied for unemployment benefits at the peak of the Pandemic in 2020.
According to the criminal indictments, the money was spent on a car, clothes and credit card bills instead of helping his bid for office.
“This indictment seeks to hold people accountable for their bad choices,” said US Attorney Breon Peace.
