Former debate opponent says that Trump has an audience to choose from

JD Vance: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and the Farm Bill, a farm-land activist says Trump has an audience of one: Trump, says former debate opponent

As a farmer he wants to hear the candidates talk about immigration, trade, tariffs, and the Farm bill, not personal attacks.

“Vance will spend ninety minutes affirming that the GOP core principles of diplomacy, statesmanship, and personal responsibility have all but been extinguished from a once serious party.”

Chris was a local Democratic chair who came to the party after spending twenty years in the local GOP administration, and he said his expectations forJD were not lower than they should be.

That’s Tim Ryan, the former Youngstown-area congressman whom Vance defeated after winning a seven-way Republican primary in 2022, on the strength of Trump’s endorsement.

Someone is going to try to frame the Harris- Walz ticket as out of touch, so I think it will be very aggressive. They’ll be blamed for everything and the world’s going to end if they get elected,” Ryan said about Vance on the debate stage. Donald Trump has an audience of one, and he will be hitting that hard.

There are false and racist rumors about legal Haitian immigrants, as well as his negative comments about childless women, that will probably surface in the future, said Ryan.

Most people are less familiar with the policy positions of the two candidates for president than with their partners on the ticket so the debate will be a good chance for both of them to present their views to the American public.

“I don’t know if it’s who he really is or who he thinks he really is at this point,” Ryan said. He is very thin-skinned and can fly off the handle a little if you hit him in the right spot.

During the debate, Ryan stated that Walz should fact-check him in real time. CBS News, which is hosting the debate, said it will be up to the candidates to call out inaccurate statements rather than relying on its moderators.

Republicans in Ohio were happy to see their candidate selected as a running mate. And Republican strategist Mark Weaver said Vance has appealed to moderates who may be still deciding.

“Republicans are energized, and many independents are impressed by his policy expertise and his eagerness to deftly answer all press questions while campaigning,” said Weaver, a consultant who’s has worked with a range of Republicans, from local officials in Ohio to former President Ronald Reagan.

Weaver said that over the years, Vance has improved his communications skills. It will be either the Vice President and President of the Senate or a first term Senator with a higher profile than his peers, if there is any change in November.

This story first appeared in the NPR Network’s live blog of the 2024 vice presidential debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz. For the latest on the campaign, head to NPR’s Elections page.

Moderators asked Vance if he would, as vice president, “seek to challenge this year’s election results, even if every governor certifies the results.” They wanted to know about his previous comments on the 2020 election, as well as what he wants states to do before certifying the election.

If I had been the VP, I would have told the states, like Pennsylvania, Georgia and so many others, we needed to have multiple slates of electors. The way to deal with an election is legitimate, and I think a lot of people had a lot of problems with it. I think that is what we should have done.

During the Trump campaign, the discussion over electors was a key point of controversy. That scheme resulted in several criminal investigations.

To be clear, there is nothing in the Constitution that empowers a vice president to force states to have multiple slates of electors. Legal experts say that it’s up to states to decide. There was no reason for the states to consider a number of slates of electors.

The role of a vice president during certification is ceremonial. The Brennen Center for Justice says the law clearly states that the vice president does not have the authority to determine the validity of electoral votes.
