The news of the probe is being done by the US attorney’s office in the Eastern District of NY, as the Republican has admitted to lying about parts of his biography. Santos has faced questions over his wealth and loans totaling more than $700,000 he made to his successful 2022 campaign.
Mr. Santos did not respond to repeated requests from The Times that he furnish either documents or a résumé with dates that would help to substantiate the claims he made on the campaign trail. He also declined to be interviewed, and neither his lawyer nor Big Dog Strategies, a Republican-oriented political consulting group that handles crisis management, responded to a detailed list of questions.
The lawyer said that it was no surprise that the congressman-elect has enemies at the NYT who are trying to destroy his reputation.
CNN reported that the claims that his grandparents fled the Holocaust as Ukrainian Jewish refugees and that his mother died as a result of being at the South Tower during 9/11 have come under scrutiny.
CNN confirmed in January of last year that the accused was charged in a Brazilian court in 2011. However, court records from 2013 state that the charge was archived after court summons went unanswered and they were unable to locate Santos.
The influential chairman of Nassau County’s Republican committee thinks that George Santos needs an opportunity to address the claims detailed in the article.

In a statement sent to NPR, Baruch College said it had checked its records for “a George Santos, born on July 22, 1988, with a graduation year of 2010, and could not find a match.”

She stated that residents in the 3rd Congressional District must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress. No one is above the law and if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”

A number of extravagant expenditures, including air travel and hotels, which are one penny below the dollar figure that the FEC requires campaigns to keep receipts, are in Santos’ FEC reports.
The court documents show that Santos was the account owner and signed checks at the store. The checks were intended to pay for the purchase in two installments – set for July 25 and August 25, 2008.
The store manager told police that the clerk had to pay the full amount of the fraudulent purchase in installments, although the store waved some payments for the clerk. The manager said they were able to locate the owner of the bank account after the sale. He said he had closed the account in 2006 after losing the checkbook.
At one point the clerk was able to track down Santos using social media and, he said, Santos promised to pay him back but never did. The clerk turned over pictures of Santos to police that he had found on social media. The conversations between the clerk and the bartender are included in the documents.
