The Never-Trump Guy: Donald Trump as America’s Hitler in a 2016 Text Message about Joe Biden’s Oasis
The pick for running mate was long-awaited. The Vice President, who was his running mate, said he wouldn’t endorse Trump, because he was concerned about the protesters at the Capitol who wanted to stop the election of Joe Biden. Pence refused to interfere with the election certification.
On the first day of the convention in Milwaukee, the selection came, a couple days after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump said on Truth Social that he had been hit by a bullet, and law enforcement confirmed one spectator died and two were critically injured. The Secret Service killed the gunman, who the FBI has identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania.
After his close call, Trump called for unity, though he quickly returned to more familiar rhetoric railing against what he called legal “Witch Hunts” against him by “the Democrat Justice Department.”
Since the election of Trump, he has become more aligned with the former president. In an interview with Time, he stated that he had gotten Trump’s issues from the beginning. I didn’t think he was going to make much progress on the issues I cared about and I just thought that he was not serious.
Vance’s 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy is about growing up in poverty in the Rust Belt, and he branded himself as someone who understood–and could explain–the forces of discontent that led to Trump’s victory. At that time, he called himself a never-Trump guy and went so far as to say that Trump could be America’s Hitler in a 2016 text message. The text was made public by a former Yale Law School classmates.
