The Pentagon Fires Haugh: The Case for a “Hot, Healthy, and Unflattered” Secretary of the Joint Chiefs
Since taking office in January, the Trump administration has dismissed several top military officers, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. C.Q. Brown.
Democrats on the Intelligence Committee criticized Haugh’s ousting. Mark Warner, Senator from Virginia, said that it was “astonishing” that President Trump would fire the nonpartisan leader of the NSA while still failing to hold any member of his team accountable for leaking classified information. Representative Jim Himes (D-CT) said in a statement to The Post he was “deeply disturbed” by Haugh’s removal.
“It is astonishing that President Trump would fire the nonpartisan, experienced leader of the NSA while still failing to hold any member of his team accountable for leaking classified information on a commercial messaging app,” Warner said on X. He was talking about the recent disclosure of U.S. attack plans in Yemen.
General Timothy Haugh, the director of the National Security Agency and US Cyber Command, was fired on Thursday, according to a report from The Washington Post. His removal reportedly occurred just one day after right-wing activist Laura Loomer pushed for his firing during a meeting with President Donald Trump.
Milley was chairman of the joints chiefs until his retirement in 2023. In that role, he was responsible for recommending senior military leaders for open positions, as was the case when the previous NSA chief, Gen. Paul Nakasone, retired in 2023.

Trump acknowledged speaking with Loomer on Wednesday and said she made recommendations, though he said any personnel decisions were his own. The president said that he listens to everybody and makes a decision.

Haugh was nominated by Joe Biden. He led the Cyber National Mission Force after spending more than 30 years in the military.
The Washington Post says that Lieutenant General William J. Hartman, who served as the Cyber Command deputy, has been promoted to acting director of the National Security Agency.
