An Army Sergeant in the Texas Capitol – “Stand Your Ground” vs. ‘Death to the Hell”: Attorney General Greg Abbott Describes a Black Lives Matter Officer
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says he is working to pardon an army sergeant who was convicted Friday of killing a protester at a Black Lives Matter rally in 2020.
Perry’s defense has argued that he shot Foster in self-defense after Foster approached his car with an assault-style rifle. His lawyers said that he was an active duty sergeant working for a service that made extra money at the time of the killing. His defense has said he dropped off his client near the protest, and didn’t know the protest was taking place. He carried a handgun in his car for protection as a driver, according to his lawyers.
“Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney,” Abbott said.
The shooting of Foster was self-defense, according to the attorneys for the man. Prosecutors said that if Foster had raised his rifle atPerry, he could have driven away before firing his revolver.
Perry, who was charged in 2021, was stationed at Ft. Hood about 70 miles (112 kilometers) north of Austin in July 2020 when he was working for a ride-sharing company and turned onto a street and into a large crowd of demonstrators in downtown Austin.
Floyd died in May of 2020 after a Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee against his neck. Floyd, who was held, said he couldn’t breathe.
Perry’s apologies to Abbott: I’m all you, but you can’t do that. Sgt is an EVIDENCE
The pardon process “is outside our control,” he added in response to Abbott’s tweet. He said the upcoming sentencing hearing and evidence related to Sgt are what the legal team is focused on. The service to our country byPerry and his character.
According to CNN affiliate KEYE, the prosecution claimed that the encounter began when he ran a red light into the crowd gathered for the police brutality protest and had previously posted on social media about shooting protesters.
