The Fox News Tonight Debate: Revisiting Voting for the Voting Rights of the First Black Delegate in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin

This will be the only time the candidates meet on stage and simultaneously present their policy positions to the broader American public, which may be less familiar with them than with their partners on the presidential ticket.

Both of the candidates hold the same roles, and are campaigning to win the votes of working-class voters in Pennsylvania,Michigan, and Wisconsin this fall.

The debate will be moderated by Margaret Brennan, chief foreign affairs correspondent for CBS and Norah O’Donnell, anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News.

Follow NPR’s live blog on Tuesday for the latest updates, analysis, fact-checking and color — and also watch the CBS News Vice Presidential Debate Simulcast. You can listen to NPR debate coverage on public radio stations, as well as in the NPR app.

The first-term senator, who was once a critic of Trump, came to political relevance when he wrote the book Hillbilly Elegy, blaming Biden and Democrats for the struggles of the rural economy he grew up in. In the Senate, Vance has positioned himself against Republican leadership at times but on issues like abortion, immigration and election integrity, he’s closely aligned with Trump.

A former football coach and teacher named Walz is called “Coach Walz” by some. As governor, Walz secured several progressive wins in his state, including clean energy mandates, universal free school meals, family and medical leave benefits and abortion protections.

The Minnesota vs. Ohio VP Debate on Dec. 8, 2017: Sean Vance’s Nomination to the Vice President and Anomalous COVID-19

Since his nomination, Vance has had to address controversies that are likely to come up again during the debate, including couch-related jokes and criticisms of him calling prominent Democrats “childless cat ladies.” Vance has also come under fire for spreading the false claim that Haitian immigrants are eating pets in Ohio.

The riots in Minneapolis after George Floyd’s death and widespread fraud during the COVID-19 program have led to questions about Governor Walz’s handling of the situation. Audits have suggested lapses in oversight by the state Department of Education.

The governors of Minnesota and Ohio, who are vying to be the next vice president, will compete in a debate on Tuesday.

After serving in the National Guards for 20 years, he was engorged on deployment to Italy. The person who served in the Marines and did a six-month deployment to Iraq was also not seen in combat.

There will be no audience in attendance, and the candidates will each take a stand behind podiums. Candidates will have two minutes for closing statements. He chose to go second with his closing statement after winning a virtual coin toss.

The microphones will not be off for the duration of the debate as they were in the last one between Trump and Harris. The candidates will have two minutes to answer questions, then two minutes to reply to their opponent, and then one minute for rebuttals.

For each question, the candidates will have 2 minutes to answer and 2 minutes to provide responses and rebuttals. Moderators can choose to grant an additional minute to continue a topic. The candidates are not allowed to bring pre written notes with them, and they won’t have a heads up on questions.

The State of the Art: The Impact of the Biden Administration on Tech in the House of Representatives from the Hillbilly Elegy and Vance

The former school teacher and the Hillbilly Elegy author have each taken some significant stances on tech. The governor vetoed a measure to raise minimum wage for ride hailing companies after they threatened to leave the state, then signed another bill that raised driver pay 20 percent without losing much of what he saw as power.

Vance has ruffled feathers in his own party with his stance on tech competition regulation. The former venture capitalist and Peter Thiel protégé has praised Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan as “one of the few people in the Biden administration that I actually think is doing a pretty good job,” even though her progressive enforcement and rulemaking on tech is often the subject of critical Wall Street Journal op-eds and corporate pushback.

Tuesday’s debate will likely focus more on some of the key issues in this election, including immigration policy, reproductive healthcare, and the economy, but we’ll be listening in for any hints at how a Trump or Harris administration would impact tech.

CBS will be directing viewers to the live fact-check page rather than having the moderators jump in to fact-check in real time.

The former president and vice president are in a close race in the polls going into the debate. A New York Times average shows Harris up three points in the national polls, but neither candidate has a lead in the states of Georgia, Pennsylvania, or Michigan.
