An american soccer legend’s “final breakdown” described in a letter to the editor of Sports Illustrated, by Grant Wahl, at the World Cup
The co-editors of Sports Illustrated said in a statement they were shocked and devastated by Grant’s passing.
Grant Wahl is the first person you read about soccer in America. The only other person he was with for awhile was himself. Wittyngham said that Grant was the first person to pay attention to this sport in a meaningful way.
He celebrated his birthday earlier this week with a group of people who were at the World Cup, according to a post on his official account.
“My body finally broke down on me,” Wahl wrote. “Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you … What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.” He said that he was taking antibiotics and that they were helping him.
This is not the first rodeo that I have been to. He stated that he had done eight of these on the men’s side. I have gotten sick to some extent at every tournament, and it is just about trying to find a way to get your work done.
He reported the incident in a newsletter on December 5, writing that his body broke down after he had too much stress and little sleep. He’d had a cold for 10 days, which “turned into something more severe,” he wrote, adding that he felt better after receiving antibiotics and catching up on sleep.

He said he was told to change his shirt by security staff and that they took his phone. Wahl said he was released 25 minutes after being detained and received apologies from a FIFA representative and a senior member of the security team at the stadium.
“Only some days ago, Grant was recognized by FIFA and AIPS (the International Sports Press Association) for his contribution to reporting on eight consecutive FIFA World Cups,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a statement.
“We were proud to call him a colleague and friend for two decades – no writer in the history of (Sports Illustrated) has been more passionate about the sport he loved and the stories he wanted to tell,” said the statement.
It says that Wahl joined in November 1996. He volunteered to cover the sport back when it was a junior reporter, and later became one of the most respected soccer authorities in the world.
The statement said that Wahl also worked with other media outlets including Fox Sports. After leaving Sports Illustrated in 2020, he began publishing his podcast and newsletter.
On Friday, James said that he had been fond of Grant. While Wahl was at Sports Illustrated, he did a cover story on James when James was in high school.
Other current and former US soccer players, including Ali Krieger and Tony Meola, shared their condolences, as did sporting bodies such as Major League Soccer and the National Women’s Soccer League.

Its human rights record has been heavily criticized. And, since the tournament began last month, the Persian Gulf country’s rules prohibiting same-sex relations have been front and center. When several European team captains said they would wear special rainbow armbands, FIFA clamped down and threatened the players with yellow cards.
Eric Wahl said that his brother received death threats because of his reporting onFIFA and the Qatari government and he wore a rainbow shirt.
Adams said that Grant was a giant voice in soccer that had fallen silent.
He was then transferred to Hamad General Hospital, said a spokesperson for the Supreme Court Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the body responsible for planning the tournament.
Wahl was treated in the stadium “for about 20-25 minutes” before he was moved to the hospital, Keir Radnedge, a columnist at World Soccer Magazine, told CNN Saturday.

Grant posted about the Dutch goal in the last minute of the match which resulted in extra time. But then, as more than 80,000 fans were absorbed by the drama on the field, Grant was fighting for his life. As we now know, frantic efforts to revive him were tragically unsuccessful.
The hours since then have been difficult for many of the journalists who are covering the World Cup.

I do not remember the first time I met Grant. It might have been in New York when Klinsmann was named the US soccer team’s head coach in 2011.
Our business is a way of circling each other’s orbits, in which we have spent lots of time on social media, as well as our televised interviews, in which we became friends.
One time, I remember, his wife almost stepped out in front of the global audience when she accidentally walked into the room, while they were over the phone. He waved her away without breaking his stride.
In subsequent years, the epidemiologist Dr Celine Grounder would become one of the public faces of the scientific fightback against Covid 19, and he was rarely able to conceal his pride of her achievements. He was gushing about her to me just two weeks ago.
When he was a writer for SI, he introduced James to the world with the headline “The Chosen One” and a cover story. Just hours after he’d passed, NBA great James led the tributes to Wahl, lamenting, “It’s a tragic loss. It’s unfortunate to lose someone as great as he was.”
The tributes on Saturday were so fulsome that nobody could be in any doubt about his impact. Max Rushden, the British football commentator, said he didn’t think people outside of the US understood Grant’s impact on football.
In 2011, just months after FIFA’s controversial decision to award the current World Cup to Qatar, he campaigned to be elected as the new President, promising to rid soccer’s world governing body of corruption, “Let’s cure FIFA of its [Sepp] Blatter infection,” he famously promised.

We were at the same Thanksgiving lunch at the torch hotel and later that night, he joined us live in the studio. He wanted to appear on the show, but it was his only chance to do so.
Ahead of the interview, he described his new freelance business venture, GrantWahl.Com, and shared that he was concerned that he might not break even on the trip. He told us that he had set aggressive targets to deliver the content to his subscribers.
But on that night, we were joking about the fact that on only day five of the tournament, I’d lost my voice. It was his first rodeo but I had never been to the World Cup, and I had to fly across eight time zones just to get there.
“There’s a search for respect from the US,” he explained, a search for validation from a country which has historically looked down its nose at the growth of the same game with a different name across the pond. But he knew that the tide was now turning and attitudes are changing.
As is the case with life itself, there is always a time limit for an interview, and we had neared the end. Needing a quick line to wrap it up and toss back to the main studio, I thanked Grant and told him it would be “interesting to see what happened next.”
Wahl’s remains were repatriated Monday and were in possession of the New York City medical examiner, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said Monday.
“We did receive excellent cooperation from our Qatari partners as soon as we learned of Grant Wahl’s passing,” Price said. “Our ambassador … was in regular contact with senior officials in the Qatari government in an effort to see to it that we were in a position to fulfill the wishes of the family as expeditiously as possible.”
