Pro Football Players and Fans Observed a Supervigil for Stefon Diggs at the University of Cincinnati Hospital after his 2016 tackle
Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs arrived at the University of Cincinnati Hospital where Hamlin was being treated late Monday night, ESPN’s broadcast showed.
Hamlin has played all of the games. The Bills chose the University of Pittsburgh product in the sixth-round of the 2001 draft and he is currently a member of the team.
According to his Pittsburgh Panthers player bio, he was redshirted – meaning he sat out on games while remaining on the team – in 2016 due to injury. He missed time due to injuries in the past.
Everyone in the community is praying for Hamlin, the NFL Players Association said in a statement. “We have been in touch with Bills and Bengals players, and with the NFL. At the moment, the only thing that matters is his health and well being.
“It’s definitely the right call,” he said after the Lakers game against the Charlotte Hornets Monday night, adding, “The safety of players in all sports is always the most important. It was a terrible thing to see.”
“My thoughts and super prayers go up to the skies above for that kid’s family, for him, for that brotherhood of the NFL, and everybody who’s a part of the NFL family,” James said.
Well wishes and prayers were sent by several star athletes, including Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, and free agent Odell Beckham Jr.
Football fans of both teams, meanwhile, were gathering at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center early Tuesday morning, holding a vigil for Hamlin.
Hamlin’s care wasn’t given information by the UC hospital spokeswoman. It’s also unclear when hospital officials may brief the media.
After his injury, fans showed their support for Hamlin by contributing millions of dollars to an online fundraiser that Hamlin started back in 2020 — before he went pro — aimed at buying toys for kids affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in his hometown. As of midday Tuesday it had raised more than $3.8 million, far surpassing its original goal of $2,500.
Several pro football teams sent thoughts and prayers to Hamlin after the tackle, including the Bengals, the Arizona Cardinals, the Seattle Seahawks and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“I’m asking all New Yorkers to join me in praying for Hamlin, his family, and his teammates in Buffalo,” the Mayor said.
Fans gave millions of dollars to a charity that Hamlin started in 2020 before he was picked in the sixth round of the 2021, showing their support.
A new wing at a local hospital was built after Bills Quarterback Josh Allen’s grandmother died. They also raised $75,000 for the favorite charity of a rival player, the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson, after he was removed from a 2021 playoff game for a concussion.
The game was halted early in the first quarter, when the 24-year-old collapsed after a collision with a player, and left both onlookers and players distraught.
Players, teams and athletes from football and other sports have flooded social media with tributes and prayers. He played football for the University of Pittsburgh before moving to the NFL.
In his senior year, he led his team to a 15-1 record, a WPIAL Class AA title and PIAA state title, and made a name for himself. Recruitment sites Rivals and 247Sports named Hamlin the top-rated defensive player in Pennsylvania and several Division 1 football schools pursued him.
After Jackson’s Injury, Hamlin’s Journey to Pittsburgh, And The Chasing M’s Foundation: A Memoron with a Pittsburgh Community
“I was just so Pittsburgh. Everything was Pittsburgh for me,” he said. I wanted to give my city a reason to smile and bring something to the city.
He has played in all 15 games so far, tallying 91 tackles (tied for second-most on the Bills), six tackles for loss, two pass breakups and 1.5 sacks this season.
Hamlin spoke about Jackson’s injury — and the opportunity to play football, especially alongside a close friend — in an appearance on One Bills Live earlier this season, in a video clip that has since resurfaced on social media.
Hamlin said that he cherishes every second that he can. Every second of the day. We just had our prayer, our DB prayer we do every Wednesday. He was next to me and I grabbed his hand a bit harder because you never know when your last day could be like this. I’m cherishing every moment that I can.”
“My whole world is centered around my family; they’re the only things that don’t go on in my life,” he said. “I don’t really do too much without my mom and dad’s opinion. Whether I take it or whether I don’t … sometimes I just want to hear it.”
Years earlier, Hamlin told the Globe that he wanted to stay in Pittsburgh for college in part to be a role model for his brother, who was 2 years old at the time, and cited his parents as his personal role models.
Pittsburgh sports journalist Amanda Godsey tweeted Monday night that her mind went straight to Hamlin’s family after seeing him collapse, recalling that he seemed close to his parents and had his brother on his lap during a media session several years ago.
Hamlin wrote on the page that this fundraiser would be the first program of the Chasing M’s Foundation, which he created to give back to his community (Hamlin is also the founder and CEO of Chasing M’s, a clothing brand he developed while in college).
A game in Cincinnati that ended with a hit to the chest of Tee Higgins, the quarterback of the Bengals, and an ambulance
There is an event happening tonight, 8:56 p.m. ET — Hamlin tackled Bengals receiver Tee Higgins around midfield, taking a hard hit to his chest. The time was recorded by a reporter at a local TV station. At first glance, the play wasn’t unusual, as Hamlin stood up and adjusted his facemask, but then he collapsed, falling backward on the turf.
Lisa Salters reported that medical staff fought for more than 9 minutes to help Hamlin. Buck confirmed that health workers had been performing CPR on Hamlin throughout the commercial breaks.
“There’s nothing to say,” Buck said at an earlier point as the cameras showed Sean McDermott and the players with their faces full of emotion and concern.
9 p.m. — In a video that was posted by local sports reporter Joe Danneman, an ambulance was seen backing quickly toward Hamlin at Cincinnati’s Paycor Stadium.
“The entire Bills team is out on the field right now,” Salters said. “Several players are down on their knees, other players are holding hands, praying. You can just see the worried looks on their faces.”
The quarterback and other players of the Cincinnati football team gathered together. There was brief applause when Hamlin was seen on a stretcher.
9:12 p.m. — Hamlin was taken off the field by an ambulance. The emergency vehicle then paused in the parking lot — apparently to give Hamlin’s mother, who was at the game, time to ride in the ambulance with her son, Danneman reported.
“I have zero clue how anybody is expected to continue playing this game,” The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr., who is based in Cincinnati, tweeted. “That was frightening.”
Ben Baby reported that players were coming back on the field, and it looked like the game would continue. Burrow was seen throwing warmup passes, with his helmet back on.
“They’ve been given 5 minutes to, quote unquote, get ready to go back to playing,” Buck said of the situation. “That’s the word we get from the league and the word we get from down on the field, but nobody’s moving.”
“However, coaches Zac Taylor and Sean McDermott met and brought both of their teams back to their locker rooms,” the station said. “They were seen in the tunnel between locker rooms meeting with the game officials and passing a phone to each other. Shortly after that phone call, the league announced play was to be suspended indefinitely.”
9:29 p.m. — “Zac Taylor just walked to the Bills locker room area and is waiting outside,” Danneman reported, adding that Taylor and McDermott then jointly met with referees.

The Bengals have no hope of resumming their NFL game at the end of its 18th season. A comment on the WCPO broadcast of the Bills-Bengals game
As questions lingered about the apparent initial plan to resume play, local TV station WCPO, which was carrying the game, noted that the five-minute warmup period is standard protocol after most delays.
It has been said that before the game was officially suspended, the Bengal players went to the Bills’ facility to join their teammates.
Tuesday, April 2nd at 1:45 pm. The NFL issued a statement saying the Bills-Bengals game will not be resumed this week — the 18th and final week of its season — adding that the league “has made no decision regarding the possible resumption of the game at a later date.”
“There was no time period for the players to get warmed up,” Vincent said, according to Garafolo. Warming up to resume play wasn’t something we thought about. That’s ridiculous. That’s insensitive. We shouldn’t be in that place.
