OpenAI is launching GPT-4.5 today, its newest and largest AI language model. GPT-4.5 will be available as a research preview for ChatGPT Pro users to start. OpenAI is calling the release its “most knowledgeable model yet,” but initially warned that GPT-4.5 is not a frontier model and might not perform as well as o1 or o3-mini.
GPT-4-5 will have improved writing capabilities, a better world knowledge, and arefined personality over previous models. OpenAI says the model is better at recognizing patterns and drawing connections and it’s ideal for writing, programming, and solution of practical problems.
It was previously reported that OpenAI was using its o1 reasoning model, codenamed Strawberry, to train GPT-4.5 with synthetic data. OpenAI says it has trained GPT-4.5 It was similar to the methods used in GPT-4o with the use of new supervision techniques combined with traditional methods.
So, what’s it like to use the new model? Pro users are getting a first look, with rollouts for Plus and Team users scheduled for next week and Enterprise and Edu the week afterwards. The GPT-4.5 is compatible with the Canvas feature, but it isn’t compatible with the Voice Mode.
ChatGPT 4.5 is in stark contrast to other recent AI innovations, like DeepSeek’s R1, that attempted to match the performance of a frontier model with as few resources as possible.
