OpenAI’s Vision of AGI: The Last Seventy-Five Years at The Verge and the Implications for the Future

The arrival of AGI is not the first time that Altman downplayed the idea that it would be able to control the majority of intellectual labor. It could be on existing hardware within the next few years. We at The Verge have heard OpenAI intends to weave together its large language models and declare that to be AGI.

OpenAI’s definition of AGI is now less grandiose than it used to be, according to the speaker at the DealBook Summit. There’s a lot of inertia in society and so I expect the economic disruption to take a little longer than people think. “So, in the first couple of years, maybe not that much changes. And then maybe a lot changes.”

“Current evidence shows that progress will likely continue,” Murati said. There isn’t a lot of proof to the contrary. It is not known whether we need new ideas to get to AGI-level systems. I’m quite optimistic that the progress will continue.”

Murati started out in aerospace and then Elon Musk’s Tesla, where she worked on the Model S and Model X electric cars. She became one of OpenAI’s top execs last year as the board wrestled with the fate of CEO Sam.
