Delta Air Lines Cancelled Flights During the Global Software Outage Following a First-Principles Recommendation
Travelers need to pack some patience. Delta Air Lines is experiencing delays and canceled flights as a result of the global software glitch that occurred on Friday.
In the public letter, Bastian wrote that several Delta applications run on Microsoft Windows, resulting in many tools being impacted in the outage. The airline’s crew tracking tool was deemed non-functional and unable to properly process the unprecedented number of changes triggered by the system shutdown.
In a public letter Sunday, Delta offered travel waivers to customers on flights impacted by the outage, allowing them to change itineraries and rebook their flights without any added fees. But in a post on X, Buttigieg said that under new federal regulations, customers are not obligated to accept the travel credit offered to rebook flights but are entitled to a prompt cash refund.
Hundreds of complaints have been filed with the US DOT about unacceptable customer service conditions at Delta Air Lines. I have made clear to Delta that we will hold them to all applicable passenger protections,” Buttigieg wrote.
Buttigieg added that under new federal regulations, customers are not obligated to accept the travel credit offered to rebook flights but, instead, are entitled to a prompt cash refund.
Prompt refunds, free rebooking, and timely reimbursement of food and hotel stays for consumers affected by delays and cancellations must be given byDelta to consumers who choose not to do so.
Delta Air Lines is Fully Cooperating with the Department of Transportation and Civil Enforcement after a Fault in the Software Update from CrowdStrike
The DOT said in a statement that the civil penalty Southwest received was the largest it had ever levied for consumers.
Delta Air Lines said it is fully cooperating with the department after acknowledging the notice of the investigation.
The rights of Delta passengers will be ensured by using the full extent of the department’s investigative and enforcement power.
“We remain entirely focused on restoring our operation after cybersecurity vendor CrowdStrike’s faulty Windows update rendered IT systems across the globe inoperable,” the airline said in its statement, adding that teams are constantly working to get its operations back to normal.
Millions of Microsoft users worldwide were knocked offline following a flawed software update from CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity group. CrowdStrike said there was a software glitch that caused the problem. The company said that it withdrew the problematic channel file that affected customers’ systems after identifying the issue.
