The water that pours out of your tap, or that’s unnecessarily packaged in a single-use bottle, or that helped grow the produce in your fridge—all of it may well have come from aquifers somewhere. These layers of underground materials can be made from porous rock or gravel and hold water. Some of the water that flows out to sea when it rains accumulates in subterranean stores, but some of it is deposited deep into the ground.
