The Nintendo Switch 2: Preliminary Predictions with a Two-Minument Teaser and More on the Gamemaker’s Expectations
After weeks of leaks and wild speculation, Nintendo has finally announced the Switch 2, the highly anticipated successor to its wildly popular hybrid handheld console. The gamemaker released a two-minute teaser today with a first look at the console, a handheld that appears very similar to the original Switch but bigger.
A secondusb-C port is at the top of the switch. It is possible to connect the headphones without sacrificing a charging port. But perhaps it might have some other mysterious function. Has native support been improved? It would be nice to connect more than two controllers. What about the UI? Can we expect to see a homescreen similar to the original Switch? What about the UI for the eShop? Can you still post your clips on Facebook? Will Nintendo add the ability to post to other social media or streaming platforms?
Prior to the reveal, there were rumors that the Joy-Cons would have magnetic Hall effect joysticks that would supposedly combat Joy-Con drift. So, what improvements has Nintendo made to protect against drift? Will Nintendo still offer repairs for the new Joy-Cons if they do drift? Will it sell new Joy-Cons separately at launch, and do they come in any new colors?

There is a new button on the left Joy-Con that goes directly below the home button. Does it have something to do with a new chat functionality like rumors have suggested?
In the trailer, there was a brief glimpse of a game called Mario Kart, and it looked like there would be fifteen simultaneous racers with 24 spots behind the starting line. Will the Switch 2 feature bigger player lobbies and will the console support communication with them? What of Amiibos? Will the Switch 2 still support those, or are there plans to make more?
How much the Switch 2 will cost is also a question. The original Switch retailed at $299.99. Since then, the cost of everything has gone up, especially computer chips. The base model was only $50 more expensive than the Switch OLED. But without knowing its internal specs, it’s hard to guess what the Switch 2 might cost.

In May of last year, the company promised it would reveal a new console by April 2025. Last month, details and alleged photos of the device leaked from manufacturers, and later on platforms like Reddit and X.
The Switch 2 announcement is a foregone conclusion, even after several peripheral makers show off their replicas of the unrevealed hardware to show off their own accessories.
It’s hard to overstate the impact the Switch has had on the gaming industry since its launch in 2017. Not only has it become one of the best-selling consoles of all time—146.2 million units sold globally as of September 2024, putting it behind only the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS handheld, though it may overtake even those by the end of its life cycle—but it’s almost single-handedly driven the renewed surge in gaming handhelds.
