It’s forecast to be dangerous for holiday travel in much of the country as a frigid blast of air moves into the southern United States.

Beginning Sunday, temperatures will be between 10 and 30 degrees below average. By Tuesday, that bitter cold will spread from Washington to Wisconsin and down through Texas, and will become more extreme, with some areas reaching 45 degrees below normal.

The wind chill warning is still in effect. Five whole days of bitterly cold temperatures to kick start the winter season, and it’s not just for Montana.

Since Florida will not cool down until at least the end of this week, everyone hates the state for a few days.

Even colder air is expected to arrive later in the week in Atlanta, where temperatures were set to drop below freezing early Monday morning. The low Friday night in Atlanta will be around 13 degrees with the high temperature Saturday still below the freezing mark at around 29 degrees, the Weather Service projects.

Some Floridians will see a much more sudden drop. The temperature in Pensacola on Thursday was 64 degrees and the one 24 hours later was 38. And yes, this means overnight low temperatures are likely to drop below freezing.

It will be hard to challenge daily recordlows/cold highs because of this event, and due to the historic 1983 and 1989 cold waves. At the very least portions of the East may end up seeing the coldest temperatures for any December since 2017.”

The incoming arctic front brings “extreme and prolonged freezing conditions for southern Mississippi and southeast Louisiana,” the National Weather Service in a special weather statement Sunday.

Ice fishing will continue through the cold blast, since the temperatures won’t scare away anglers there — “not the hard-core ones anyway,” said Jason Mundel, who runs the Ripp’n Lipps Guide Service in northeastern Montana.

The coyote contest was going on in a nearby community despite the fact that Sunday night was 4 degrees there. “Those guys are just out in the elements, just bundled up,” he said.

The New England Police’s Search for Warming Centers After a Cold, Wet, and Heavy-Weather Cargo Collision

He went to check on a woman in downtown Atlanta who he thought had mental issues, but instead found she had died from suspected cold. The Greyhound bus station, which is open 24 hours in downtown Atlanta, is where her body was found.

He said people without housing who die in freezing weather often do so because they are battling alcohol, drugs or severe mental illness, or they do not trust others and find themselves on the streets rather than a shelter with other people.

Frank Pereira of the National Weather Service said that the heavy, wet snow made it difficult for people to travel.

Hundreds of crashes were reported by New England police this weekend. Maine State Police said Saturday night they had responded to more than 180 crashes since Friday evening. There were only minor injuries.

Vermont officials are searching for locations for warming centers in the most hard-hit areas. State officials warned that the power may not be restored for several days.

“Last night we had some people come in who weren’t able to cook for themselves, and so we definitely made sure that we had room for them,” Becket Gourlay, a host at the Waterhouse Restaurant in Peterborough, N.H., said on Sunday. “Even today we had some people who came in to watch the final match for the World Cup because their TVs were out.”
