Approximately 8 to 12 inches of Snow in Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut from Nor’easter-Like Storms in the East Coast, with a Threat for Flooding

Most of Massachusetts and northern Connecticut are predicted for 8 to 12 inches of snow, with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour.

Nor’easters are powerful storms that form along the East Coast with winds from the northeast, and such extreme weather events may be occurring more frequently and growing stronger due to climate change.

Despite the snow and rain, it will be warm in the eastern U.S., compared to the previous weeks, given the lack of cold air from Canada.

Near Philadelphia and Camden, N.J., there is a possibility for minor coastal flooding starting Sunday into Tuesday. The NWS said to prepare for partial or full road closures.

Further south of Binghamton, in counties like Monticello, the snow will be even harsher with up to a foot of snow possibly appearing Monday evening. The snowfall is expected to be light, with less than an inch predicted to accumulate.

The South Shore of Long Island is prone to coastal flooding. Parking lots, parks and buildings with basements near the waterfront are especially vulnerable, the NWS said.

The winter storm will also impact a small tip of southwest Maine and southern New Hampshire. More than 6 inches of snow may fall in areas like Sanford in Maine and Concord, Dover and Manchester in New Hampshire.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu declared a snow emergency, ordering municipal buildings and public schools closed on Tuesday and instituting a parking ban on major roads.

“City teams are ready to clear the city’s roads and respond to emergencies during the first snowstorm of this winter,” said a statement from the mayor’s office.

“Please be aware of parking restrictions so that we can clear the roads as quickly as possible, and check on your neighbors, family, and friends to be sure everyone has a plan to stay inside and stay safe,” she added.

In New York, governor Kathy Hochul warned residents of the potential for significant snow and urged them to stock up on essential items. New York City public schools were going to hold classes remotely on Tuesday.

The wet and windy conditions could fell trees and damage power lines, and also snarl traffic during the morning and evening commutes in several busy East Coast cities.

The storm system was moving in the Southeast and Ohio Valley. Up to 6 inches of snow were predicted for parts of the Ozarks, as well as showers and thunderstorms in the Southeast.

The Oklahoma City metro area saw several inches of snowfall overnight Sunday, with a small area near Lawton in southwest Oklahoma receiving between 8 inches to a foot of snow, the NWS said.
