The Shooting of a 43-year-old Student in Parkland, Florida, on the Campus of Michigan State University: A New Class of College Shooters?
A gunman shot and killed three people and injured five others on the campus of Michigan State University Monday night before fatally shooting himself, police said.
The shooter was a 43-year-old man, who wasn’t associated with the university, and we didn’t know why he came to do this. Police have not said whether the victims were students or given their names or ages.
On the eve of the anniversary of the mass shooting at the high school in Parkland, Florida, the 67th mass shooting in a single year was observed by the non-profit group Gun.
In order to understand what brought this person to this point in the community, the FBI and their colleagues are taking a history of this person. “This community is struggling to understand why they are the latest in what is a uniquely American experience, and understanding and experiencing a mass shooting in their midst.”
The suspect, a 43-year-old man, was found dead off the school’s campus, from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They said the man is not associated with the university and a motive has not been determined. Police said there is only one suspect.

Trush said he was watching TV just after 8 p.m. in his apartment when he saw police cars and ambulances speeding down Grand River Avenue. The people were running out of the building.
“We are relieved to no longer have an active threat on campus, while we realize that there is so much healing that will need to take place after this,” said Chris Rozman, the interim deputy chief of the MSU police.
As shelter-in-place orders were in effect Monday evening, another student, Gabe Treutel, said he and his dorm mates hunkered down and turned to a local police scanner for information.
According to a CNN report, another woman who is a student at the school told the network that they were inside a lounge area at Campbell Hall on the north side of the campus.
“We’re not learning very much,” Charles told CNN’s Erin Burnett earlier in the night, saying she did not hear any gunshots herself, but that some of her co-workers heard shots.
Though officials said there is no longer a threat to the campus, the university will move into emergency operations for the next two days, during which time students will experience a continued police presence as investigators probe multiple scenes.
All campus activities, including both in-person and virtual classes and sporting events, have been canceled for at least 48 hours. The school is providing counseling resources for students and employees.
We want to ensure that the families that have been touched by this tragedy are comforted and know that there is peace in the moments like this. We can’t allow this to happen again.

The attack at MSU – which came one day before the five-year anniversary of a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida – resulted in the closure of all East Lansing Public Schools Tuesday.
The night has been horrible. It has been terrible for the students in the region. Schools have been closed. This has affected our whole region, our whole community. It’s affected families, everyone across our community,” Lansing Mayor Andy Schor said.

The response to the shooting was a monumental task, according to the Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police.
“We have 400 buildings on campus and over 5,300 acres and part of the process of the response that we had is that we were able to divide and organize to be methodical in the search process and obtain evidence and share as it comes through. Lynch said that there becomes a task with the university’s size.

The two buildings at the center of Monday evening’s shootings are accessible to the general public during business hours, police said in an early morning news conference Tuesday.
Hundreds of officers from different agencies responded to the scene, Rosman said. The victims were taken to Sparrow Hospital. They were listed in critical condition, but no other information about the victims was available.
Police said Berkey and others were secured and that the shelter in place warning was lifted early Tuesday morning. Earlier in the evening, police discouraged parents from coming to campus.
“For parents, we are sympathetic,” she said. I can only imagine the emotion that’s happening right now. It will help us and it will help us in our response and they will be able to identify the shooter without the people on campus.
